The Moose in the Hat is a surreal mixed-media artwork created from objects that held personal meaning to me: a stuffed moose, a pearl necklace, handcuffs, and a hat. I brought these familiar objects together to create an unexpected composition where the moose is cuffed to the hat it sits in, surrounded by a floating sea of pearls.
The strange combination of objects allowed me to explore how familiar things can take on completely different meanings when removed from their everyday context. The moose, hat, and pearls become part of a whimsical and slightly surreal scene that feels both playful and mysterious.
I created the piece using a combination of pen and ink, watercolor, and Conté, layering different mediums to build the textures, details, and atmosphere of the composition. The contrast between the delicate pearls, the soft stuffed moose, and the more graphic linework creates a visual tension that ties the unusual elements together.
The Moose in the Hat is a playful exploration of symbolism, memory, and mixed-media experimentation, transforming a collection of personally meaningful objects into an imaginative world of its own.
