Mischief in Monochrome is an abstract black-and-white artwork created from the same personally meaningful objects used in The Moose in the Hat: a stuffed moose, a pearl necklace, and a hat. Rather than arranging the objects into a recognizable scene, I took their shapes, textures, and forms and mashed them together into a more abstract composition.
The result is a playful and chaotic exploration of familiar objects pushed beyond their original identities. Pieces of the moose, pearls, and hat overlap and transform, creating unexpected shapes and relationships within the composition.
I created the piece using pencil and charcoal, allowing the contrast between soft shading, dark marks, and lighter areas to build depth and movement. Working entirely in monochrome shifts the focus away from color and toward texture, form, and the energy of the composition.
