The Beginning of the End — Abstract Ink Self-Portrait

from $20.00

The Beginning of the End is a 22 × 30-inch black-and-white abstract self-portrait created with calligraphy pen and ink. The image depicts my face screaming as tears rain down, but the figure is woven into an abstract landscape of trees, branches, and organic forms.

The piece represents the internal anger and devastation I experienced after losing a friend and feeling helpless in not being able to save their life. Rather than creating a traditional portrait, I used the surrounding landscape to reflect the emotional turmoil happening within me. The screaming face emerges from the trees and forms, blurring the line between the figure and the environment.

I created the work by repeatedly dipping a calligraphy pen into ink and applying it directly to the page. The resulting marks range from delicate lines to heavy, saturated areas, allowing the ink to build and spread across the surface. The tears falling from the face become part of the landscape itself, creating a visual connection between grief and nature.

The Beginning of the End is a deeply personal exploration of grief, anger, helplessness, and devastation. It captures a moment when emotions felt too large to contain and became something I could only express through the physical act of drawing.
