This is a colored pencil portrait of my golden retriever, Cosmo, drawn on black paper. And, of course, he had his favorite ball in his mouth — pretty much his signature look!
Working on black paper creates a completely different effect from my usual black-and-white ink drawings. Instead of building up shadows with ink, I used colored pencils to bring out Cosmo’s golden coat, bright eyes, and the details of his favorite toy against the dark background.
I love how this technique gives the portrait a rich, vibrant feel while still capturing the personality that makes Cosmo so special. And for him, there was no question that his ball had to be part of the drawing. After all, he wouldn’t be Cosmo without it!
